<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2wh1IpkGBNCft-CWs63uIfW7SSe-6HDnuX-drX_wj6E4_ocO7XFnGgBHaso1mCDAy5Q32rTz_R9zycuH21OulegsaeY0curWAtI-0peGpp4mrpkGTsaSw_ZEphzlkOAxA26FpkJl8Xyo/s1600/DSC_0066.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2wh1IpkGBNCft-CWs63uIfW7SSe-6HDnuX-drX_wj6E4_ocO7XFnGgBHaso1mCDAy5Q32rTz_R9zycuH21OulegsaeY0curWAtI-0peGpp4mrpkGTsaSw_ZEphzlkOAxA26FpkJl8Xyo/s320/DSC_0066.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I had a friend ask for input in choosing curriculum when starting out, so with a few updates, (including links to everything I mention!) I thought I would share with you what I shared with her.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
As I was home-schooled myself, I had a lot of first hand experience, plus saw what friends' families did..... so I thought had a pretty good background for choosing and implementing curriculum in our own home.<br />
<br />
I thought I would keep the things I treasured growing up, but "improve" on things I didn't like. I had a lot of preconceived notions about what our home-school would be like. Everything would run like a well oiled engine, NO SICK days, my kids would always be obedient and respectful, and several years ahead of their peers in all subjects. And most of all, we would sit around the fire, reading aloud books for hours every day! (Are you laughing at my pre-children ideals yet?)<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So far, the main thing I have kept is the Math curriculum <a href="http://www.mathusee.com/">Math U See</a> (I LOVE Math U See, couldn't imagine ever using something different!!!!)<br />
<br />
Every thing else has been trial and error. My best advice is to be flexible. Commit to something for just a year, but be willing to change it up if it doesn't work, even mid year.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Where to Start:</b><br />
If you are just starting out, I think it helps if you narrow down what your style is (also keeping in mind your children's inclinations)<br />
<br />
<br />
Do you like workbooks? The sense of accomplishment of checking off boxes, and an "official" organization telling you "this is how you do it"? Then you might like mail order curriculum. Of which their are many flavors, some more workbook based like <a href="http://www.setonhome.org/">Seton</a>, Some more classical literature like <a href="https://www.motherofdivinegrace.org/">Mother of Divine Grace</a>, and some more gentle, like <a href="https://www.chcweb.com/catalog/">Catholic Heritage Curricula</a><br />
<br />
<br />
Do you like to read aloud a lot? If you do, a Charlotte Mason style would suit you better. There are many resources, but not really "all in one packages" that you buy that are Catholic<br />
<br />
There is a free online syllabus <a href="http://materamabilis.org/ma/">Mater Amabilis</a> that I get a lot of inspiration from. I found it too complicated to do everything on their list though, especially once I had multiple school age children.... <a href="https://www.amblesideonline.org/">Ambleside Online</a> is another (non- Catholic) resource for this style<br />
<br />
<br />
Do you like craft projects and open ended study? Then you might like doing Unit studies or similar. That is what we are doing this year, with Catholic Schoolhouse, which is for multiple ages. (4 -10 years) It follows a 3 year cycle of history, where the art, religion, geography is all integrated (we are also using their science) We just add our own spelling and Math to it to make it a complete curriculum.<br />
<br />
<br />
Do you hate schedules and pressure? Then explore Unschooling. While not the option that I prefer all the way through for my kids, this is what I myself did from 6th grade through high-school. I had one year of almost complete un-schooling my own kids when the twins were born, and it has benefits for sure, but I find I need a bit more structure to our days now.<br />
<br />
I actually was interviewed for a friend's podcast, and I talk a lot about unschooling on it if you want to listen <a href="http://www.catholichomeschoolmoms.com/14-un-schooling-is-not-un-parenting-with-vanessa-vanderhyde/">My Podcast</a> Also check out John Holt's books (NOT Catholic, but some good insights) <br />
<br />
<br />
No matter which way you choose, my ALL TIME FAVORITE book about homeschooling is <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Little-Way-Homeschooling-Suzie-Andres/dp/0983180008/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1452805892&sr=1-1&keywords=little+way+of+homeschooling">A Little Way of Homeschooling </a>by Suzie Andres It is more of an un-schooling book, but I recommend it to everyone, because it really gives a glimpse into other families lives, and lets you know it's OK to find your own groove!</div>

(I promise!!)So, after saying that I was going to really stick to doing a blog this time, I fell on my face. Again.....<br />
<br />
Time to pick myself up, dust off and move on!<br />
<br />
Life went a little crazy on me this fall. Turns out that buying our dream home, (A big old farm house!) fixing up aforementioned house, then moving in, takes every last ounce of emotional and physical energy you have!<br />
<br />
Follow that up with the holidays, and kids getting sick between Thanksgiving and Christmas with Hand, Foot, Mouth Disease (for the second time in 6 months!!!) and that is where I have been!<br />
<br />
So kicking things back off with a few pictures, and hoping to get posting on CSH 2nd quarter soon! (we squeezed in the first two weeks between the holidays, and will pick up on week 9 next week, So stay tuned!)<br />

<br />
For those of you unfamiliar with <a href="https://www.pixelscrapper.com/">Pixel Scrapper</a>: It is an awesome online community for designers, and every month the members put on a themed blog train, where you can hop around to the sites and download whichever pieces you like.<br />
<br />
What do you do with the stuff? Glad you asked ;-) I primarily use them to make digital scrapbook pages that I print for our albums. But the possibilities are endless! Cards, school projects, online albums and more!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4-20J5p_Q83vpwxIU2smEpnq4negCKJXfVQnDXFuKWy9o2Scq_ws9azRZJmysNMOVl0F3uSm90-U6RHfMCL2kIR_FQiyFAAC3gMd5PfFfbsjJr-TXQBOF7ukjH8c4PlnMDLc7FNGeG3U/s1600/October+Blog+Train+-+Page+023.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4-20J5p_Q83vpwxIU2smEpnq4negCKJXfVQnDXFuKWy9o2Scq_ws9azRZJmysNMOVl0F3uSm90-U6RHfMCL2kIR_FQiyFAAC3gMd5PfFfbsjJr-TXQBOF7ukjH8c4PlnMDLc7FNGeG3U/s320/October+Blog+Train+-+Page+023.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
My first portion is a set of quick pages. When you download them, each page has "holes". You use your program of choice to layer it over your own pictures, Add some journaling and you are done!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Departed from the lesson plans a bit here... I didn't have CD cases, or a place to put them while they sprouted. I remembered seeing a plastic baggy experiment on Pinterest, so we did that instead. It was super easy! I mostly followed directions from here: <a href="http://www.teachpreschool.org/2011/09/planting-and-growing-beans-in-our-preschool-window/">planting-and-growing-beans-in-our-preschool-window</a> I will update later with a photo of our results. </div>

Hi there! Falling a bit behind on posts, but hope to catch everything up soon. Turns out that homeschooling takes up a big chunk of my day ;-)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did want to point out that the post titles refer to what week in the lessons plans our project are from, to make them easier to search. My plan for this year is 2 weeks of CSH, 1 week review. Which has really looked like 2 days one week, 3 days the next, Family vacation, 1 full week.... You get the picture; we just do our best to roll with it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For art this week we tackled the Bull Leaping Fresco from Week 2. I changed it up a bit, instead of using muslin, I used some burlap I had laying around. We also used 5 minute drywall plaster we had in the garage, both seemed to work just fine!</div>

You can see in this picture how deep the outline is. We decided that didn't work well, and ended up smoothing more plaster over everyone's project so we could make the impressions lighter.<br />
<br />
Although we intended to only do the plaster as directed, my oldest, L1, REALLY wanted to paint right away (we read somewhere else that frescoes were painted on WET plaster, so that's how he wanted to do it.) So we dove into the Week 3 part right away!<br />

(Perfect audience for learning Manners, am I right?)<br />
<br />
I am using the videos from <a href="https://www.theetiquettefactory.com/products_list.php">The Etiquette Factory</a> and the first week is just an introduction to what Manners and Etiquette are, so I decided to create a little poster for the kids to color/ decorate to help us get to know each other better. We will probably practice some manners, and take turns telling everyone about our posters. :-)<br />
<br />
You should be able to right click and download/print. Please let me know if you have any trouble!<br />
(and as always, please follow terms of use in the right sidebar, thanks!!)<br />

(Sort of ;-) )We are back from our family vacation, and ready to dive back into our school work next week! (including our Co-op starting on Fri, which my kids are anxiously counting down to!)<br />
<br />
I had the pleasure of being interviewed by a friend for her podcast recently. Since this was just before I discovered CSH, I don't touch on that specifically, but a lot on my own experiences being Un-schooled growing up, and on our more Un-schooly life the last 2 years. I hope you enjoy!<br />

<br />
Since we visited <a href="http://frogsandflutterbyes.blogspot.com/2015/08/csh-week-2-history.html">King Tut</a> on Tues, We did science on Thurs (I had already bought the spinach and needed to use it up quickly!)<br />
<br />
The experiment was to see PHOTOSYNTHESIS in ACTION!<br />
First the prep work: punching holes out of organic spinach (note: see my pretty school wall? I will do a post all about it soon!!)<br />

Thing I learned:<br />
<br />
I assembled everything while they were playing, and did the experiment while the twins were napping, which made the whole thing smoother than the last science project!<br />
<br />
You really need to pay attention to detail with this one. We had to do the whole project twice, because I missed the part about holding your finger over the tip of the syringe, while pulling it down to create a vacuum. The neat part about it was seeing the wonder in their eyes when it DID work the second time!Vanessa VHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15480248461585115642noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2466136748142805748.post-70900860993955092082015-08-19T20:03:00.000-07:002015-08-21T20:17:48.630-07:00CSH Week 2 - History We have the privilege of living near the awesome city of Grand Rapids, MI. I am literally blown away with the awesome opportunities we have, and lately by God's providence in lining them up in perfect timing for our school journey this year.<br />
This week on Tues, since I had babysitter for the littlest 3, I decided we should take in the King Tut exhibit at our local museum: <a href="http://www.grpm.org/">Grand Rapids Public Museum</a> This ended up taking the place of Art in my lesson plans for the week.<br />
I apologize for the blurry pictures! I toted my heavy camera around the whole day... only to find that I forgot to put the SD card in it :-( Thank goodness for phones though, since blurry pictures are better than none!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The exhibit was made up of awe inspiring, museum grade reproductions.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The site says to expect 90 min to get through the exhibit, but it took us closer to 2 hrs. We had audio tours (a cool little gadget; you punch in the exhibit numbers as you go through, then hold it to your ear, to hear a narrator talk about them.) You also use the gadget to listen to the many videos with additional information. It was a fascinating multi media experience, although it didn't entirely sit right with me to have everyone in their own little bubble, which makes for less discussion and shared experience. So we did try to stop in between and talk and look without the "noise" in our ears.<br />
<br />
I believe that everything in the exhibit was actually museum grade reproductions, as the originals are too fragile to travel, but they were stunningly executed! The first rooms that you go into made it feel like you were right there when they discovered the tomb.<br />
<br />
I especially loved the replica of the Rosetta Stone. The boys picked the model boats as their favorite.<br />

It's hard to see the mural on the back of the throne, but we easily recognized it when flipping through something Egyptian the next day!<br />
<br />
Not Egypt related, but we had time to fit in a planetarium show and carousel ride (both free for members, which helps!) Then we grabbed lunch to make it a special day all around. I am really enjoying reaching this stage with a bit older kids, we share interests and all have fun hanging out together. Of course after a little break, I was more than happy to get home and snuggle my little 3 too :-)Vanessa VHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15480248461585115642noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2466136748142805748.post-91961498868207811692015-08-15T22:24:00.003-07:002015-08-21T20:21:04.766-07:00CSH Week 1 - Art / Cave Painting!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We did cave painting for our first Art lesson. Since the brown paper that I <strike>found in the garage</strike> acquired was on a large roll, I decided to change it up a bit, and I taped in under the ledge of our counter, so that it would feel a bit more "CAVE" like. </div>

<div>
<br />
<div>
We tore into the CDs as soon as they arrived, and have been enjoying the music memory work CDs for the first quarter. Last week, Daddy started reading Adam and His Kin at bedtime. (Early history, written by a Protestant, but an interesting perspective) And this week I started The Golden Goblet, an Egyptian historical fiction.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Because we had a class at the museum to attend on Mon, our official first day for the 15-16 school year was Tues. Aug 11th. I wish I could say it was all roses and sunshine.... but that wouldn't be accurate. I am pretty sure they forgot every thing they learned in Math last year during our 4 week break; and tears were shed over the shortened time to play with Legos and outside....</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Getting started; memory work at breakfast is a GREAT idea! I pop on the CD while we eat. We pause to talk about things at will, and when we finish the current week, we skip around to favorite songs on the disc. The Timeline cards are hanging on the Dining room wall, so they are easy to refer too. (N4, the 4 year old was already pointing out the "Creation" card to Grandma VO.)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After breakfast, they had a little break, then on to Math and Science. I decided to combine the Science from Week 1 and Week 3, so that I would only have to stop at the florist for flowers once.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Week 1 Science Project:</b></div>
<div>
I had such high hopes for Science, but was disappointed that our first experiment was less than stellar... Splitting the stems of the carnations didn't work at all :-( so I just put 3 in each color, and they didn't suck up the dye very well that way either.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The celery was much better! It sucked up a LOT of dye, and we were able to easily identify the Xylem. (Turns out those stringy bits of celery are there for a reason!)</div>
<div>

<b>Experiment 2: (Week 3 in the book)</b></div>
<div>
Because I didn't have a mother's helper this Tuesday (I plan to mostly do Science on the days she is here to distract the twins) I had to stop and take care of them and N4 a few times, and without direct supervision of the Botanists, it turned into a free for all, with flower parts EVERY WHERE! They were happy to examine and dissect, but didn't seem too interested in instruction.... When they were finished, they decided they needed to save their parts, so I gave a quick lesson on how to press flowers between paper, I think they intend to glue into their nature journals and cover with tape to preserve, after they dry a bit.</div>

<div>
Just as I was cleaning up, N4 decided he really wanted to do it after all :-) He was actually the most interested in the individual parts, and enjoyed taping them down to the diagram (I printed from the <a href="http://www.catholicschoolhouse.com/blog/2015/07/10/year-2-quarter-1-science-botany-lapbook/">Botany Lapbook</a>) He was so proud of it, that we had to hang it on the wall in his room.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>What I learned:</b></div>
<div>
The more I prepare ahead of time, the better!!!</div>
<div>
Less is better, next time no doubling experiments.....</div>
<div>
The twins are NOT interested in science ;-)</div>

We were especially excited to see the new outdoor Japanese Water Garden. (Warning: Picture heavy post. I honestly couldn't choose my favorites!)<br />

I am hoping to post at least once a week. To keep me accountable :-)<br />
<br />
Here is some of my prep so far: (I have posted some of this on the Catholic Schoolhouse at Home FB page, but wanted to consolidate it here for easy reference!)<br />
I made an extensive book inventory. It was a massive undertaking!<br />
<br />
First I put them all in a Google spread sheet: <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Ht9meHj9FWz5SKR_x8BQ1tOZZyWSLIUPBohqof-bNCs/edit?usp=sharing">My Catholic Schoolhouse Quarterly Booklist</a><br />
(Highlighted yellow means I hope to read them this year)<br />
<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjA32GlaHl2xuu9RugUtOcSTiQTjTT7nUqcxqVXeBcn6jhslNWc598huhjffUxCZrz2tMG1NEjPg_eFi8rTlqxiV2q1Pp69o6PYpwhm6VwQzb9AHlygCZCB4njSeHY7jhotKdTouYNWqrE/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjA32GlaHl2xuu9RugUtOcSTiQTjTT7nUqcxqVXeBcn6jhslNWc598huhjffUxCZrz2tMG1NEjPg_eFi8rTlqxiV2q1Pp69o6PYpwhm6VwQzb9AHlygCZCB4njSeHY7jhotKdTouYNWqrE/s320/photo+2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
As much as possible I tried to put all the historical books in tubs according to the CSH 3 year cycle. (and some of the science, but I decided I still wanted a fair amount of those to stay on the reference shelf) Each year has a box for each quarter, and a box called overview to hold lesson plans, timeline cards, and other reference materials<br />
<br />
You can download the bin labels that I printed onto colored card-stock here: <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzMHkkNP1aotOXdXWTJzb1dyZUk/view?usp=sharing">Labels</a><br />

<br />
<br />
The 2 off years are stored in the basement, but still accessible to add to as I find books for the next 2 years.<br />
<br />
This years boxes go in the bottom of the main school cabinet for easy access.<br />

<br />
<br />
My plan is to have a book basket out and easy to view, so that we remember to read them. Some books will stay in the basket for a whole quarter, some will get changed out every week (like picture books)<br />
<br />
<br />
This is how I plan to display the 5 Timeline cards per week. (Found at Hobby Lobby for a different purpose, and decided I like it for this better!) I plan to eventually have a whole wall dedicated to Catholic Schoolhouse, but it is a work in progress..... I am not sure where to put it in the meantime.<br />

To Be Continued......Vanessa VHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15480248461585115642noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2466136748142805748.post-3314257502288929022015-07-27T20:04:00.000-07:002015-08-08T11:40:22.292-07:00A New Home-school Adventure! Starting this year, our crew will be embarking on a new style of Home-schooling, using the awesome classical curriculum from <a href="http://www.catholicschoolhouse.com/">Catholic Schoolhouse</a>!<br />
It utilizes a 3 year history cycle, that can be done in a group setting with ages 4-11 (and since this year, I have ages 4-10 in our "class" I think it will be perfect!) While it started as a co-op curriculum, many people are using it as a stand alone curriculum at home, which is what we will be doing.<br />
It is a flurry of activity here, as I organize, order books, organize more, and research ideas. The kids are excited too, especially when books show up on our doorstep, they can't wait to dig in. L1 (10yo) is especially frustrated when I tell him certain books won't be used until the 4th Quarter of the year :-)<br />
